Obviously, I'm late in discovering the fabulous BBC comedy "Black Books," which ran six episodes for each of the three seasons under the watchful eye of comedic genius, Dylan Moran as Bernard Black. Set against his saintly foil Manny (Bill Bailey) and the ever-bored Fran (Tasmin Greig), the trio of slackers drink too much wine as the hijinks unfold.
I knew it was going to be deliciously funny after the first episode when Bernard would rather sustain grievous bodily harm than do his taxes. He lures troglodytic skinheads to administer a beating to put him out of commission.
"Which one of you bitches wants to dance?"
I also love the taunt about their girlfriends being unfulfilled and alienated.
Hee.
Thanks to FatMammyCat and Andraste for the tip.

My favorite scene is when Bernard wakes up to find Manny looking at him and his first thought is, "Am I dead?" and his second thought is "Who are you, have I joined a cult?"
I can watch that one 7 second exchange over and over and over...
Yep, that's a great scene as well.
I watched the whole series in a week, Andraste. Too funny.
off to see mr moran next month.....cant wait.......
I LOVE Black Books, the one where Fran falls for the voice of the shipping news reader nearly caused me to have a stroke from laughing.
Always wonder if he got the idea for the series when he was working on Notting Hill - he's the guy who tries to steal a book in Hugh Grant's shop.
Btw, I read he's in a new Irish film which was showing in the festival in Toronto.
the series is great, I saw some of his stand up recently though and I was disappointed.
Manuel, you lucky man!
FMC, that episode is gold! I also love the one where Fran and Manny play the American gamblers. Her accent kills me.
Conan, I was unable to watch "Notting Hill" due to my Julia Roberts allergy. The film fest here is madness and really tough to get tickets, plus with the new job I put my head down and largely ignored it.
Morgor, I saw some of his stand up on dvd a few years ago and was rolling on the floor. Maybe he's drinking too much these days?
Maybe he's drinking too much these days?
maybe, but i brought this up with my friends last night and they were saying he's still good, maybe i watched his worst standup in a critical mood. I'll give him another chance though cos i hear he's playing in belfast soon....
That's a brilliantly well written and performed series, but then I am self confessed Moran *fan*.
I love the episode when Fran gets involved with the Eastern European bloke and his family, and they only love her because she has a car. Fantastic fun.
I loved it all. I also watched it in a binge, and then rewatched most of it with my son, when he was 11, thinking he'd like the Manny character. He stunned me by much preferring the comedy of Moran's Bernard.
Sorry I get to your posts late, Medbh - I'm in the non-broadband Irish sticks these days.
