Not much going on here so here a few links:

This is far from his best essay, but go have a peek at David Sedaris' article for the New Yorker's issue on food. He must have given up cigarettes to get ready for France's ban on smoking. I have nearly 2 years left.

Justine McCarthy zeroes in on the Labour Party's reinforement of male privilege by positioning Eamon Gilmore as the new leader as opposed to Liz McManus, Joan Burton or another supremely qualified woman. Status quo is in check.

The Belfast Telegraph has a piece up that mirrors the prevailing MSM's take on online communication and exchange. It's hardly subtle. The idea that "Facebook" turns you into Mr. Hyde is outrageous. Sam, Facebook didn't make you stalk your ex-girlfriend or attempt to assuage your flagging ego by building up a list of so-called friends. You did it all yourself.

I think neither MacManus (former stickie) or Burton (old Labour) wanted to go for it. A much bigger issue than gender is the party's failure to have either men or women of a younger generation ready to take up the reins.

They "officially" declined going for the position, Conan, but that doesn't mean it's what they really wanted.

Gilmore won't cut it anymore than Rabitte could. MacManus would have been a better option but frankly for any 60 year old man or woman to take on the leadership of any political party they would need to be extrordinarily charismatic and energetic. That the labour party has no 40-year-old women or men to take it on is evidence of a sort of die-hard attitude of its TDs that is going to kill off the party.

Look what's happened in Galway - I may be wrong but my understanding is that Higgins (avowedly feminist) stood in the way of Connolly, younger and a woman, who then left the party and ran as an independent.

Oh, yes, Conan, you make an excellent point about the generational gulf in the party. Without young blood they won't survive.
