Thursday Read 'Ems:

Shorter Archbishop Brady: Instead of giving your money to psychics, you should be giving it to the church.

Liz McManus should take over for Pat Rabbitte as head of the Labour Party. Not only is McManus a feminist and an award-winning novelist, she's also eminently qualified to lead the party based on her several decades in elected office. Plus, she has a blog. Ireland needs more women such as McManus in leadership positions.

The Guardian reports that women between 25-34 spend more time online than men in the same age group, heralding the "feminisation" of the web.

Here's a piece on "I am Legend" starring Will Smith which is slated for a December release. My question was if or how they would ruin the brilliant novel by Richard Matheson. My suspicions are confirmed by this quote from Smith:

" I am Legend is essentially the story of Job, the idea that life is awful if you can't connect to the possibility that there's a reason for everything."

What? Or, more acccurately, WTF? A half-assed biblical reading of that book is completely effed up and misplaced. Matheson's work cleaves to science and empiricism and not godbaggery and fairy tales for simpletons. If it's one thing that makes me want to tear my hair out, it's the reflexive impulse to read and compare everything to scripture when there are much better and more nuanced or complex stories out there. Matheson's novel has nothing to do with Job or the bible. There is no "reason for everything" other than to explain the plague which turned humanity into vampires. So now the film's ruined for me months before it even screens.

Check out this list of the 13 worst accents in film. Several of them listed are the worst Irish accents on film. Hat tip, Defamer.

Isn't he a scientologist anyway?

I don't think so, FMC. He has something else in common with Cruise as far as the gossip goes, anyway.

I had read that, but put it down to delightful salacious gossip. Jada would break his face for him if she didn't swing the other way too.

Well, that's what they say, that it's a case of a double beard. It would be the perfect arrangement for two people trying to make a go of it in a deeply closeted industry.

Perhaps I will reassess my negative opinion of Liz McManus which I must admit is based solely on my having played poker with her son a number of times.

What a dick.

And what a classy way to make informed political decisions.

Hmmm, I knew a guy who was in the same class with her son and he thought she was great. But yes, losing to someone in poker will set up the inclination to dismiss the parents. She's a smart and stylish woman, Gimme.

Josh Harnett in that hairdressers movie is just so bad it beggars belief...

Hey now, ease up there. Who said I lost?

And incidentally does style help to qualify her for leadership a political party?

Manuel, never saw that one. I'm not a Hartnett fan I must say. He thinks acting is to vary his degree of scowling.

Tara, men and women in politics are ruhtlessly evaluated on appearance. I would say it's worse for women. A prolonged national debate followed Hilary's display of a little cleavage in the U.S. So yes, being stylish is an advantage in politics.
